Spring Clean That Inbox

Happiness is also a clear inbox. My primary gmail account gorges itself with gluttony over the emails I let pile up. There comes a time, every few months, that I break down and attempt the cleaning up process.

Well with spring on her way, that time is now. And with that time, I’ve got a plan to keep my inbox down to a minimum. My plan is simple, and with simplicity ought to bring a plan so foolproof only a fool can’t attain it.

Emails, Facebook, Twitter, these things shouldn’t be stressful.

The Plan?

Go surf, right now? Well, no not exactly. But it is that simple and beautiful.

A “Ten-or-Less Inbox”

Simple. Attainable. Realistic. Bullet-proof. Fool-proof?

I don’t quite like the idea or the sight of an empty, naked inbox. It makes me anxious and I wonder why nothing important or engaging is happening. That said, I believe ten is a good fit for things to keep in the inbox. The rest either get a label or get filtered. You can see my top 5 labels on the right. With Gmail, nothing gets deleted. I’ve had my account for 6 years or something crazy, and I still only have 35% of my account filled. And that is with a few other email address connected to it. Also, the beauty of gmail, is that it says something about the user. It says something like, yeah I’m hip, I get it, I’m not using AOL or Hotmail, and you can trust I get a thing or two about the internet.

Oh, and if you do use AOL, I don’t care how many free CDs they send you every month, stop using them. Start a Gmail account and have all of your mail forwarded to it. You can send and receive email from any address if you set it up through gmail. If you need help with this, hit me up and I’ll get you along. Alright, so before I go on like a gmail salesman (I’m unfortunately not), get to spring cleaning that inbox!

I think the real challenge would to not simply archive everything or label everything. Do you really need that “john Smith added you as a friend on facebook”…. why not get the rubbish out now while you know it’s rubbish. I look at it in your minimalist steps. It’s about letting go, non-hoarding environment. By archiving every email it’s a form of hording your emails because you never know when you will need to go back to it. Like my pair of black boots that I haven’t worn in over a year (maybe I’ll need them for the next Halloween costume) or Why just not rely on them? Just some thoughts to put in that head. I am a “gmailer” but my approach is only “archive and label” that I value or need as a resource. Just because gmail gives you the space doesn’t mean you have to use it. Just because you have a 75L pack doesn’t mean you have to fill it to the brim. eh? ) I wish I could bold in my comments. :)

Good Post! Hopefully it will inspire some spring cleaning. Kiss! Kiss!

Yes! I agree! I don’t keep a lot of those emails either. I archive wildly though, and you bring up a great point. I’ll have to keep an eye on how often I archive. I’m sure I have a lot of junk that can go out the window. So no facebook, meetup, travel deals, etc etc will be archived!

Decluttering your life is a beautiful thing. It definitely relieves the stress of chaos. Simplistic living allows you to focus on what’s important, like surfing.

arguably, surfing is the best reason to simply life!

William, the idea of adding labels is brilliant! I know you didn’t invent it, but for some reason your screenshot made it click for me. I especially like the “things I send to myself,” I do that all the time and this way I won’t have to see it.
By the way, do you know about google apps? It lets you use gmail to handle the mail from your own domain, which means you can also forward it to other accounts. I enjoy having the email from my domain in email rather than some clunky cpanel thing.

    Great post!

Adam, I’m glad you were able to find that useful! Gmail seems to have an endless amount of neat tricks and shortcuts, so it’s good to share the love. I didn’t know much about the google apps. I will be investigating that further though. For me, all good things point to google!

Sorry, it seems I left the David part of David William out. No bad vibes intended!

Haha! William is actually my great grandfathers name so I’ll wear it with pride! :)

[...] these same things, where they end up in the endless archives of gmail, unsorted, unlabeled, lost. That can be quite [...]

I use an app called SpringClean that lets me stop commercial emails from my iPhone without all the hassle of filters. Worth a try.
