Red Tide Surfing

October 3rd, 2011

It’s been a while, something like two weeks… which is pretty lousy of me. But it’s been a damn productive two weeks, and I’m excited to share.

There’s been a red tide here in San Diego for the past few days. Red tide is quite an experience. Basically, phytoplankton (I believe specifically dinoflagellites) accumulate quickly and in an intense density, leaving the water a brownish-red color. My brother was in town so we had been surfing every day. We surfed a spot that was completely rust colored, so intensely that you couldn’t see a few inches below the surface of the water.

So what’s so great about red tide? Well, red tide surfing.

(watch that video. really, watch that video right now.)

The red tide at night is something to be seen. The dinoflagellites are a type of bioluminescence. They glow a bright neon blue color when moved or disrupted. So that top photo is one we took from the beach at night, while waves were crashing. You can see the electric blue color from the shore and on the sand every time you step. It’s something out of science fiction.

The rust colored water leaves little to be desired in the daylight. The strange thing is the beauty that only comes with nightfall. I guess it’s nature’s way to remind us to change our perspectives sometimes. Maybe just wait for the sun to go down.

Is that last picture of you? My blog tomorrow is about surfing as well. A lot of life’s lessons come from surfing I guess.

I am digging the surf post Matt. Let’s get out there this week!

And yes sir, that is me in that last photo! My new board is a blast!

That blue foam is absolutely amazing, if I had a bucket list this would be going on it.

Thanks Dave, wouldn’t have known about this otherwise.

    Andrew

Andrew, get out there and find yourself some red tide. The neon blue will change your life. Or at least it will make you happy for a night.

I had the chance to night surf red tides at Swami’s and Beacons. The trail is amazing. You surf looking backwards. I also love the word dinoflagellates.

Did you throw the tidal sand? It’s magic. So ugly in the daytime. Mystifying at night. Thanks for sharing this with the world.

I only mistakenly found the glow of the tidal sand by kicking it as I ran into shore. The best excuse to throw sand!

It is humbling to consider all the things nature is doing while we may have no idea…

You must really try the turquoise waters of Nicaragua Central America, just recently the latin pro surfing tournament was celebrated there:

Alex, interestingly enough, I have surfed at San Juan Del Sur. I actually slept on that beach near the Tres Hermanos little hostel. They only have a little electricity after dark, based on the charge of the car batter they use!

Me and a buddy slept on the crab infested beaches there for a little surf trip. Makes me wanna head right back there! Thanks for sharing!

Wow this is awesome. I have a friend who lives just off the North Shore and I’ve been wanting to go out there, crash with him, and start surfing.

Never even knew about red tide surfing, but it has only added to the allure I’ve had. You can’t go wrong adding some Avatar-like characteristics to something that’s already pretty damn awesome.

Chris, I’m pretty sure the North Shore gets some gorgeous red tides. That would be the best place on earth to see it. Go for it!

Live it up David! Looking forward to hear of more adventures!

Thanks Liane! Shouldn’t life be one big adventure anyway? :)

It’s my pleasure to share it David, i mean that little hostel is located in the beach where the latin pro took place just recently.

If you’re planning another trip, good news:
the latin pro nicaragua organizers have requested that Nicaragua becomes the headquarters of the world surfing championship in 2012, let’s see how it goes to Nicaragua.

many local sites will be announcing this online in case that happens so soon.

    Alex,

I wish I could have been there to surf that. I fell in love with surfing in Costa Rica a few years ago and I want to move somewhere where I can do it more frequently.

“The strange thing is the beauty that only comes with nightfall. I guess it’s nature’s way to remind us to change our perspectives sometimes. Maybe just wait for the sun to go down.”

I just did something silly that I knew I should have utilized my usual calm patience with…but didn’t. This line is not only beautifully put, but is an admonishing cyber finger wag from nature and from David W.

    incredible vid…

    What song is this?

We just got red tide here in Texas. Will have to go check out the “blue stuff” tonight. Red Tide during the day really sucks.
